Plastic surgery:
function & form.

A balanced overview of a broad surgical specialty—what it can involve, how professionals approach safety, and where to learn more.

Educational, not promotional. Surgery is not right for everyone and always carries risks. Appearance is personal; nobody needs a procedure to be worthy, healthy, or confident. This page is not advice about whether anyone should have surgery.
WHAT DOES THE SPECIALTY INCLUDE?

Two broad areas, with overlap.

01

Reconstructive surgery

Reconstructive procedures aim to restore or improve function and form affected by a birth difference, injury, illness, or another medical condition. Examples can include repairing a cleft lip or reconstructing tissue after cancer treatment.

02

Cosmetic surgery

Cosmetic procedures are generally intended to change appearance when there is no medical need to repair a function. They may involve surgery or non-surgical procedures; all can have risks and should be discussed with qualified professionals.

HOW CARE IS PLANNED

A careful process—not a quick fix.

  1. ConsultationA qualified clinician discusses goals, health history, alternatives, expected outcomes, uncertainties, and risks.
  2. Informed choiceThe person should have time to ask questions and decide freely. They can decline or pause; there should be no pressure or promise of a perfect result.
  3. Procedure & recoveryIf chosen, a trained team explains what will happen, possible complications, follow-up, and recovery. Results and healing vary.
SAFETY & AGE

Ask questions and involve trusted adults.

Every procedure can involve possible complications such as infection, bleeding, scarring, changes in sensation, anesthesia risks, or needing additional care. The exact risks depend on the person and procedure; a qualified surgeon must explain them.

For anyone under 18, involve a parent or guardian and an independent qualified health professional. Rules differ by location, and cosmetic procedures for young people require special care and safeguarding. This guide does not encourage minors to seek cosmetic surgery.

Be cautious of social-media claims, pressure to change your appearance, or anyone guaranteeing results. If a concern is upsetting you, talking with a trusted adult or health professional can help without deciding on a procedure.
